5th Grade Camp
Last month the Lake Center 5th grade classes attended camp at
Sherman Lake. The camp is not just fun and games, but don’t tell the kids. The camp purpose is to help define, encourage and develop life skills through daily experiences. It focuses on defining the principles of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. Activities from sharing a cabin, group events and daily routines provide opportunities to practice these principles.
Although there is a focus on these four principles, students are also learning flexibility, cooperation, and sharing.
These skills are research-based skills shown to help children grow to become successful adults.
Another purpose of camp is to help the students see strengths in themselves and others. Students don’t need to be academic leaders to really shine in the activities at camp. The experiences at camp help students see that there is more to a person than how they perform at school. Camp allows and encourages new friendships. Breaking the kids from their normal routines and surrounding them with a large group of peers allows them to really practice these skills.
The PTO covers a large portion of the total cost of the 5th grade Sherman Lake experience (remainder is funded by parents). Your support to the PTO helps fund this developmental experience
for our children.
