All 4th and 5th grade students are welcome to participate. Teams consist of 6 students and each team reads the same 6 book titles. The teams will ‘battle’ or compete answering questions about the books. We are encouraging the students to form their own team of 6. The teams may be all of one grade or a mix of grades. They can be all girls, all boys, or a mix. If you cannot find enough students to form your own team, please let us know and we would be happy to try to place you on a team. We are also asking parents to consider coaching a team.
Battle Format: At the battle, the teams will be asked 36 questions. The questions will be broken up into 3 segments of 12 questions with a break in between each segment. The team with the most points wins. You will need to know the title of the book with correct spelling, the author’s last name with correct spelling, and the answer to the question.
The top two teams at the Lake Center Battle will compete with the winners from Woodland, Haverhill, Angling Road, Central Elementary, Moorsbridge, and Amberly in the Grand Battle.
Weekly Meeting: We would like to have the teams meet once a week to practice answering battle type questions. These meeting can take place after school offsite or if all team members are in the same grade, they may meet onsite during recess/lunch. If you meet at the school, you will need to contact the office and check availability of a meeting space. The time and place to meet will be up to the team and their coach to decide. These meetings should be approximately one hour long.
Coaching: This program will only be a success if parents volunteer to coach. The time commitment is: one hour, once a week running your team meetings December thru January plus the actual battle night (or two nights if you reach the Grand Battle). If you don’t have time to read the books and create sample questions to quiz your team, you can find many questions online.
Please attend the coaches meeting -See date above and we will provide all the info you need to have a fun and successful time. Returning team coaches are a great resource and have been wonderful about sharing ideas.
Cost: There is no fee to participate, but you may want to purchase the book(s). In the past, our PTO has purchased 6 copies of each book title and placed them in the LCE library. There will be a separate shelf housing 5 books of each title and the sixth set will be on the regular library shelving area.
Teams are welcome to use any format they choose in dividing up the reading. You may have each member of the team be responsible for one book, have each member read two books, three books, etc.
Where To Purchase The Books: In the past, the Bookbug offered a 15% discount on the purchase of one book or a 20% discount if you purchase all 6 at once.
In the past, Kazoo Books has also offered a 15% discount on the purchase of a full set of six books. No discount when purchasing less than a full set. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing from them. They order straight from the publisher. Barnes and Noble will set up a table displaying the BOB books, but they are not offering a discount.
Changes Last Year: We worked with more schools last year with a few changes; 1. Only the first and second place teams from the LCE battle will move on to the Grand Battle. 2. Only 4th and 5th grade students will be participating Also, we will not be offering t-shirts. Sorry for any inconvenience. Contact information: The PTO is sponsoring this program. Kristen Weaver is the organizer. If you have any questions please let her or the PTO know. Thank you!!
